España 1936

Fans of strategy games and historical simulation titles are in luck. Sixteen years after its first release, España 1936 is back in stores with completely revamped artwork and an edition that includes the expansion “La Armada,” the 1938 scenario, and the addition of eight optional cards that add uncertainty to events. Ready for a true historical immersion?

Created by Antonio Catalán, this new edition features illustrations by Joan Guardiet (The White Castle, Checkpoint Charlie). It allows for two-player games, ages 14 and up, lasting about 120 minutes. Spain 1936 is a simulation game that recreates the events that took place in Spain between July 1936 and April 1939, a conflict between two ways of conceiving Spain at that time.

The objective of each of the two sides is to win the war by dominating the territories. One player will lead the troops loyal to the Republican government and the other will lead the rebels, who called themselves Nationalists. The game can be won by controlling more target areas than the opposing player at the end of ten turns, or earlier, by fulfilling one of the automatic victory conditions (e.g., the Nationalist side controlling Madrid before turn 3).

The game begins after the military uprising of July 18, 1936, and the first military movements. The game board represents the map of Spain, showing the most prominent areas of the conflict, connected by movement lines, with two squares where the tokens for each side will be placed. Players will have pieces representing the different military units of each side that will face each other. In addition, each player will have cards representing events that occurred during the war and that can modify the normal course of the game. Finally, each player will have a set of five dice that will be used to decide the outcome of the battles.

At the time of its original release, Spain 1936 received nominations for the CSR Awards, IGA, and Origins Awards. Acclaimed by critics and players alike, this title is a privileged gateway to strategy and historical simulation games, as it scales very well according to the experience of the players. The additional modules included in this addition are designed to improve replayability and provide an extra challenge for veterans who want to return to the trenches.
