Dark times loom over the kingdom of Thebes. The aged, blind King Oedipus left the throne in disgrace, asking his own sons, Polynices and Eteocles, to rule the city together. Yet power corrupts, and old feuds demand further bloodshed. Soon, Polynices gathers an army and marches from the rival city of Argos against his own brother. The Theban nobles support Eteocles as he maintains a precarious hold on power in Thebes. The young king calls for defenders to guard the city’s seven gates, while seven champions of the invading force lead the assault. Meanwhile, the famous citadel of Thebes—the Cadmea—lies in chaos, having fallen into a deplorable state since the days of Oedipus’s father, King Laius. It is as if the Fates themselves have conspired against the current rulers of Thebes!
In Thebai, players take on the roles of influential leaders of noble families during the turbulent final days of the Bronze Age. Throughout the game, they must rebuild the Cadmea—the citadel of Thebes—while restoring the city’s exports, offering prayers to the gods, and safeguarding the lives of its citizens, all while witnessing the clash between great heroes who spill their blood just beyond the city gates.
